FILTER FACTS
- HEPA filters prevent some contaminant buildup, although your system still gets dirty. A dirty air conditioning or heating system has to work harder, and that can cause the AC coil to freeze up or the heating elements to burn out
- Filters with a MERV rating (8 or better) are preferred. A higher MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) means fewer dust particles and other airborne contaminants are able to pass through the filter. In general, filters you cannot see through are better
- Electrostatic filters can be cost effective and help you have cleaner air. Most rate at 85% or 94% efficiency, and they are washable. If properly maintained, a good electrostatic filter can last up to 10 years
